Borneo Bird Festival 2015

The much-anticipated Borneo Bird Festival 2015 happens this October! Grab the chance to see vibrant-coloured feathered beauties while supporting the cause to promote eco-tourism and environmental conservation.

The three-day festival takes place at Kinabalu Park, Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to various species of birds, both endemic and otherwise. Borneo is estimated to have a total of 688 resident and migratory birds and 59 endemic; 33 of these endemics reside in Sabah’s hill slopes and montane forests. Kinabalu Park is also one of the 55 IBAs (Important Birding Area) in Malaysia. The park itself covers an astounding 75,730 ha that stretches over the districts of Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Ranau. A melting pot for plant biodiversity, the park is estimated to have between 5000 to 6000 vascular plants, harbouring more than half of all of Borneo’s plant species. Take for example the unique Low’s slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum lowii) which is the only epiphytic slipper orchid of Borneo or Pinhead Orchid (Podochilus tenuis) known to be the smallest orchid in Borneo. Other wildlife that you may find in the park are Monekys, Gibbons, Slow Loris and Civets that feed on Fig Fruit trees.

During this festival, take part in various activities: guided bird walks, photography contests and many more. An array of activities and exhibitions take place at various locations around Borneo, including the Borneo Bird Race where teams seek, identify and record as many bird species as possible at designated locations, guided bird walks, colouring competition for children and birding photography contests. Expect amazing prizes up for grab with sponsors like Nikon, Canon, Kowa Optics, Investline, Lee Photo as well as IJM plantations.
